Scottish Borders Hill Forts...HOW MANY?!
I love it...coconut oil on the bum! Exhibit A of why most modern people wouldn't stand a chance of surviving in the past! I'm a proud Armstrong and can't get enough of the border history you provide Mark.
I have never witnessed anyone with the enthusiasm you have shown for your chosen subject & the heart & soul you put into the creation of your presentation. You certainly drew this fellow traveller into bygone tymes to walk on the path you took in this venture of discovery. The Spirits smile upon you.😊
Minto Castle also has Turnbull Clan History
My grandfather William Rule💞 my nan is a pedigree direct descendant my nans father Turnbull married a Swiss my great grandmother
St Nicholas is in Turkey and his coffin is under a big bit of perspex from all the people trying to touch it. When I was there there were lots of Russian Orthodox women there on pilgramidge. Very interesting video as always, so now I need to go to Peebles to say I've been the same place as Santa twice 😁
Your stories are so awesome! Don’t stop! I love the history you bring to life for us.
Bell clan descendant here….thank you for the pride and inspiration that welled up in me as I listened to you!
The pacification of the Border region was brutal and merciless but could it have been accomplished any other way? These were families that had lived their own lives on their own terms and they were themselves no strangers to pillage and rape and murder. Could anyone see them giving up the life of raiding their neighbours to become farmers or sheep herders? They were hard men, violent and unforgiving to those who stood against them and to glorify the Reivers or turn them into some kind folk heroes is both wrong and misleading. The creed of the Reivers could have been “do as thou will shall be the whole of the law” in other words, no right or wrong , just might makes right! For those who trace their roots back to those families on both sides of the border, you may see this differently. I can only say , for example, those living in America who do you feel about the LA gangs, the Mafia and even the drug cartels? To think the riding families of the border region are any different is naive. James the 1st of Great Britain did what he had to do in bringing peace to a part of his kingdom which remained beyond control of any previous Monarch. Harsh, brutal, even inhumane it may have been but again, how else do you deal with a situation like the one James faced?
Still going strong in generations today my grandfather was an Elliott I'm more than comfortable parked @ with my boys my cat my dog happy as .
Towards the end couldn't understand a word that was being said because the BAGPIPE MUSIC WAS TOO LOUD.😡😡😡😡😡😡 Geeze though, WHY was that music so loud, the editor didn't notice that ??😠. You really need to remove the music soundtrack. You either narrate or you play the loud mysic, can't do both.😠😠
A fabulous specimen!
Americans: "Wow I'm so proud to be Scottish Gaelic. They removed our ancestors during the clearances." *"Uh, you're Scottish side is Scotch, Lowlander, they're Anglo more than Gael, but they also suffered"* Americans: "Really? Oh. Screw em then." 😂
I hate to piss on your chips, but you forgot to mention why William Wallace was outlawed in the first place,, big Willie was actually serving in the English army in Scotland when he and a English. Soldier decided to go a rob a widow woman at knife point,, for this they were outlawed by the English and took refuge in ettrick forest,, hence starting his rebel career,, whats interesting is that the evil english would sentence two of there soldiers to death for a crime some would have us believe was common place among them🤔
We were in Edinburgh in March and went to the National Museum of Scotland. Very little metion of Border Clan reivers, lots of Highlander history though. While staying in Haltwhistle, the earliest Armstrong grandfather we were able to trace came from Brampton, Cumbria in the early 1700's. Would have loved to have traced the line across the border but alas Time caught up with us.
Give me a shout next time I offer Armstrong day tours through the area seeing all the sites!!
Found the stanes they planted around them. Although they did plant inside a Stell down from the stanes.
I’ll need to get back down there😁
... hi there, great to see a new vid.! ... hope it's not going to be a microwave tower site!! ...cheers...

Nice vid but your choice of music reminds me of my may years in the Sultanate of Oman & Saudi Arabia

Cheers Rodney…. Thanks for watching
On a trip to Scotland we hiked up Knock hill just outside of Largs. We were told there was a hillfort there but it was very small, not like this one. Thanks for the video.
We used to rent those fields when I was a kid and I used to go up there a lot with my now departed dad and was always fascinated by the hill fort.
Glad to see you back with another interesting vid, do you need permission to walk?
No. But you just need to be respectful as it’s a working farm. Cheers for watching!!
Hi mate. I’m from Gala, I’ve got a really interesting book you might like a look at would you like a loan of it? Its about ancient monuments in the Berwickshire area. I picked it up because I’m both a lover of stone and of history.
What’s it called?
@@MarkNicol123 it’s called “the royal commission on ancient monuments, Berwick.” It’s an inventory of ancient and historical monuments and constructions. Gives details on stone circles, hill forts and the like.
It’s been a long time again 😂. So happy 😃 all the best
Cheers Alex!!
Shame those trees were felled. That would have been a barrie wild-camping spot.
300-odd Border hillforts, eh? 🤯
Absolute madness I probably drive pat most of them most days
@@ModernPracticalStonemason Obviously, the Selgovae, Novantae, Votadini, Brigantes, and Damnonii didn't particularly like each other.

Great video. I was close to there yesterday. Walked fron the Megget Stone to Broad Law, Dollar Law then Pykestone Hill and back. A very long walk lol. I cannot see that cairn you're standing by with the drone on the OS maps? Usually they are marked. Weirdly, the OS maps label Gameshope Castle.
Thanks so much for taking us for a trip underneath that Yew Tree❤

Border Reiver history is my favorite part of British history and among my favorites of world history. I was delighted to find Oliver’s, Armstrong’s, and Elliot’s among my ancestors.
The capture of James Father William and the later murder of his father was one evil, but Longshanks hated the Douglas and knailed a Bulls privates to the white lower half of the Douglas shield over the town gates of Berwick. A personal insult that has never been forgotten nor ever forgiven.🏴 🏴 🏴 💩🏴💩
My GrandMother was a 1st Cousin to Lord Douglas, her own Father and the Then Lord of Douglas would play chess outside his house, and take a Dram with each other every Summer when I was wee boy! The Good Sir James was Scotlands most fierce onight and the English ever feared his family! ❤ Jamaise Arriere!
Got a photo for you to look at they could have invaded our homes already👍
My 12th great grand, I learned of this literally yesterday
Very good video, I went there last week , moving place .Brave men who fought and died .
I lived 3 miles away from Douglas kirk and went often. But never heard or read of any massacre in the kirk….as far as i know only his heart is in the kirk….so its not his grave
So they meet on a hill and make a deal…..what hill where….
Brilliant video.. brilliant narration … thank you..
My grandmother is a Turnbull sadly passed away many years ago in 97, So as a Turnbull descendant, I feel so proud of our ancestry.
Well done, its great that your so passionate about. Hes a very interesting character, Douglas. Ive heard of him before but not that much, thank you for sharing your well made video. Im from Ireland but I find Scottish history interesting also. God Bless.

Mark, what can you find out about the truth behind the song "The Dowie Dens o Yarrow"? Best version by Dick Guaghan And I would love to see a video showing The Carrifran Wildwood and the basis of the project, a 6000 year old yew longbow found in Rotten Bottom bog. I have a book about the place with lots of info including a poem about The Covenanters use of the glen beginning "Carrifran Gans theyre very strait, we canna gang without a road" Contact me for more info :)
